Cats are clean creatures, and they have an instinctual desire to cover their waste that leads them to easily learn to use the litter box. Most owners don’t have to do any work to get their cat to use the box - you put it out and they use it! So in most cases, a cat potty train system is not necessary. But what if your kitty is in that small percentage of household cats that doesn’t seem to understand what they’re supposed to do with their box? What if your cat prefers the living room carpet, under the table, or your bed?

The good news is that there are things you can do to train you cat to use the potty. First, did your use cat use it at one time and then suddenly just stopped. In that case you should take her to a veterinarian to see if there are any physical problems like a urinary tract infection. Once the pain is gone she may start using the litter box right away. If your kitty gets a clean bill of health for the veterinarian then think if there were any changes in your home recently. Have you bought anything new? Any new animals around? Often a simple fix can get her right back on track.

If you’re faced with a situation where your cat just doesn’t understand what to do with the box, you can step in and help. First make sure that the box appeals to the cat. Cats need privacy, security, and cleanliness. Put the litter box somewhere that feels safe to the cat, where he can see all around to make sure that he won’t be surprised or scared while he’s doing his business, but not in the middle of a room or lots of activity where he won’t have the privacy that he needs.
While in the process of potty training your cat, make sure to clean it at least once a day, preferably more. Although sometimes it’s best to leave some waste in it, to help your kitty know what they’re supposed to do in there. You may have to try a few different litters until you find one that your cat likes. Once you do, stick with that kind.
Cats usually eliminate after they eat, play, and sleep, so feed your cat on a schedule. After your cat eats, spend some time playing near the litter box. Don’t put him in the box, but you might want to scratch around in the litter to entice your cat to get in. Praise him for proper litter box use, but never punish him for mistakes. You’ll only make him try to hide from you when he eliminates. Be patient, and your cat’s natural instincts should kick in and he’ll learn to use the box.
