Ocular Health Is No Laughing Matter
Keeping your eyes healthy should be a priority for us all. Unfortunately many of us take our eyes for granted and don’t always give them the care that they need.
And to be honest, as long as they are working and not bothering us, who has time to go out of their way for eye care? Well, you should be visiting your eye doctor at least every other year, and every year after you turn forty.
If you wear contact lenses, be sure to follow the prescribed cleaning and care regimen. If you wear glasses, be sure they are the correct prescription, and most important if you require eye medication keep it up to date.
For those of us that require vision correction, all this makes sense. But what about those that do not require glasses or contacts? They can go until they reach presbyopia. That is when it is time to buy reading eyewear to be able to focus up close. It is possible to go through life without knowing something more than vision could be slowly destroying their vision.
Issues such as glaucoma and macular degeneration cause irreversible damage to an eye. However detecting these conditions early can stop the progression.
Some say that presbyopia was built in to our eyes to remind us to get back to the doctor. This certainly sounds convenient from a medical standpoint. presbyopic vision is a natural occurrence that effects us all eventually. The lens inside the eye grows too thick and dense to allow us to adjust focus, as well as the muscles in the eye lose their ability to flex the lens.
The result is the need for reading glasses, even if a person has had perfect vision for most of their life.
The more dangerous risk is that people buy halloween contact lenses without a prescription. Contact lenses, while harmless enough when used properly can be incredibly dangerous when abused.
When contact lenses are purchased from reputable sources there are two main factors that are present. One, they have been fit to a particular eye and the person has been instructed on proper care and handling. And two, they are provided to a person in a sterile capsule.
So when novelty lenses are purchased at a gas station, flea market, or even a costume shop, neither of those criteria is guaranteed. Eye disease is a serious matter and can lead to blindness.
It is heart breaking when silly abuse, such as this, leads to a sight threatening condition.
The more awareness that is spread about proper eye care and ocular health, the better off we will all see.
